So, Ya Think this Internet "thing" will catch on?

"Internet" - a CBC News Video -from waaay back in the Stone Age...
say like...1992?

or use this link">"Internet" - a CBC News Video

Sobering to think how very much 'some' things have changed, and other issues have remained the same.

What did it feel like watching this?

p.s. here, have an 'emoticon', too!

...and an even older vision of what the "Internet" might be -

Connecting without borders is a beautiful thing. Many folks still don't understand what this form of speech really means and why it is so powerful. Controllers understand, and are trying to ruin it now. It feels bad to see it in it's infancy, and note just how little time it has taken to scheme up other ways to wreck it, especially in the area of communication through our music.

However.... A sort of a prediction and look at the future...
from like... 8 or 9 years ago in our not too distant past.... *LoL* - — The Grid: The Next-Gen Internet? —
Douglas Heingartner from 03/08/2001

"AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- The Matrix may be the future of virtual reality, but researchers say the Grid is the future of collaborative problem-solving.
More than 400 scientists gathered at the Global Grid Forum this week to discuss what may be the Internet's next evolutionary step...."">

"The Internet has had an enormous impact on people's lives around the world in the ten years since Google's founding. It has changed politics, entertainment, culture, business, health care, the environment and just about every other topic you can think of. Which got us to thinking, what's going to happen in the next ten years?... ... ...." - — The Next Internet — (continues here)

which says:

"The Internet will transform the video medium as well… the choice of content and advertising will be under consumer control. Product placement will become an opportunity for viewers to click on items of interest to learn more about them including but not limited to commercial information. Hyperlinks will associate the racing scene in Star Wars I with the chariot race in Ben Hur.”
- Vint Cerf, Google Chief Internet Evangelist, September 2008"

".........three billion videos were streamed on YouTube in January 2008. YouTube hasn’t released the cost of streaming these videos, but in Google’s 2007 Annual Report, they admit that they “have yet to realize significant revenue benefits from our acquisitions of dMarc Broadcasting (Audio Ads), YouTube or Postini.” They also admit to having copyright claims filed against them alleging that features of YouTube “infringe another party’s rights.”

"Many companies have tried or are trying to commercialize videos online. The fallout point is not a shortage of investment. The market is still in search for a sustainable model that works better than Google AdWords and Flash banners......." - (continued here)

So like... will they ever get this figured out?

2009 - — Internet Turns 40 Today: First Message Crashed System —
Ker Than
for National Geographic News
October 29, 2009
" -Everyone surfing for last-minute Halloween costumes and pictures of black Lolcats today—what you might call the 40th anniversary of the Internet—can give thanks to the simple network message that started it all:

On October 29, 1969, that message became the first ever to travel between two computers connected via the ARPANET, the computer network that would become the Internet.... "

The truncated transmission traveled about 400 miles (643 kilometers) between the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Stanford Research Institute.(Watch video about the birth of the Internet.)

"The electronic dispatch was supposed to be the word "login," but only the first two letters were successfully sent before the system crashed.

Still, that humble greeting marked the start of a phenomenon that has become such an important part of modern life that many experts argue access to it should be a right rather than a privilege.

In fact, earlier this month Finland became the first country in the world to declare broadband Internet access a legal right for all of its 5.2 million citizens.... ..."">

—2012 Update —

Yes, Mixey...
and here we are...
now in 2012,
and the Internet hasn't totally self destructed... yet...
since that first
that crashed the system,
trying to complete the word "login"... 43 years ago.

And we are still
trying to keep the system from being crashed
by... the 'system' ...
only now, it's a a fight to stop stuff like
big lobby money hijacking legislative bills and deceptive stuff like...
SOPA & PIPA... four letter words,,,

Interesting... maybe we all need to go back to "lo" and just pause,
and look at it all for a while...
before the big lobby money zars take it all over...
and won't let us look at it... at all, any and all of it...
all of what we've all created in 43 years of typing away... crafting,
... the good... bad... ugly...and the incredibly, human beautiful craziness of it all,
...without first getting "their permission" from the gatekeepers,
to "login" with a special visa usually reserved for the priveliged few...
to see how it all... used to be.

I hope not... ever.

We already now have "TV"... one vast "wasteland of useless knowledge" as I believe Marshall Mcluhan once called it.

Yes, Piracy sucks,,, go get the bad guys in a major way, government...
but... leave the freedom of the Internet, as we know it, alone.
