I shot the above pics... with my Daughter Jess's old digital camera.

It's a little HP Photosmart M425 (hand me down) old camera...
(many of You know how I love using old stuff that still actually works)...

I shot the pic hand held, (held real still) testing it out... and that pic is what I got. No telescope involved, just a regular (old) digital camera, and a wing and a prayer hoping to get something worth looking at.
*lol* ~Geno

p.s: Remember to always "Look Up!" for something interesting, and even point a camera once in a while, any camera...
hold real still, and "shoot"...
sometimes you'll be surprised at what you actually record and capture.
It's all about the fun of it all! ~Geno

Hi Mixey!

(((Thank You! I do love the randomness of catching cool "stuff" at the right time. It's fun when you realize after the fact, that you just caught something worth looking at, on "digital film" ...using good old everyday technology. ~Geno)))

Ok, here's an interesting one.
Remember a while back...
The Perseid meteor Shower in 2009...

from someone who really knows what he's doing...

Look at this video that Jeff Sullivan captured in CA,
and posted on YouTube... wow!

Jeff Sullivan writes:

"Published on Aug 4, 2012
*** WATCH THIS FULL SCREEN IN 720P HD FORMAT! ***
Timelapse footage of the annual Perseid Meteor Shower in August.
The slow, horizontal lights are airplanes.
The fast, vertical streaks are the meteors.
Many are faint so you'll only see most fo them if you follow the instructions above and view this in 720P HD and expand the video full screen.
This footage is all from the Perseid Meteor shower in 2009.
I'm working on a new timelapse video to cover 2010-2012
as well as other meteor showers such as
the Geminids in December (2012).

I've written a blog post on my no-moon shooting technique:

http://activesole.blogspot.com/2011/05/producing-milky-way-images.html - Producing Milky Way Images - Jeff Sullivan

You can also create a timelapse video from a sequence of night images:

http://activesole.blogspot.com/2011/08/create-timelapse-video-of-meteor-shower.html - Create A Timelapse Video of a Meteor Shower - Jeff Sullivan

Lastly, this is 100% real, 0% fake. Here in the Eastern Sierra region of California and Nevada where I live, we have very few people to produce light pollution, very dry, clear skies, and we can drive to elevations over 11,000 feet there there is less air and pollution to shoot through.
These links to more of my night photography clearly demonstrate that I have no need to fake any of this:

If anyone would like to track the 3 mile wide asteroid Toutatis, which will be passing very close to earth in the next few days, here's the link.

The asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs was probably about a 1/2 mile wide.

December 14th, 2012:
It's 3:00am in the morning...
Just got done a Mixing session...
It is freezing cold outside.
A super, crystal clear, crisp night out there,
and i am tired as hell,
but ...
I stayed outside for about 10:00mins... freezing,
and yet, in that short time, I saw three meteors,
zip across the southern sky in front the three stars of "Orion's belt"!

Amazing night out there.

If you are reading this right now, go peek outside and look to the southern sky.

Awesomeness on a cold crisp night!

"A space rock of the kind that hits Earth about once every 1,200 years will pass harmlessly by Earth on Feb. 15."

"...Close but not too close, a fast-moving asteroid will pass 17,200 miles above Earth on Feb. 15, NASA reports.

The asteroid, 2012 DA14, is a space rock weighing roughly 143,000 tons and measuring 148 feet long, about half the size of a football field. NASA asteroid expert Don Yeomans, author of Near-Earth Objects: Finding Them Before They Find Us, compares the asteroid to the one that leveled hundreds of square miles of Siberian forest in the "Tunguska Event" in 1908. ..."

and... right now it's almost time for this one... in like 3:00 mins...

- Close call asteroid hurtling toward Earth today -
Gary Strauss, Dan Vergano and Todd Halvorson, USA TODAY -

After Friday morning's Russian meteor blast
that reportedly injured 1,100 people,
an afternoon flyby of a far bigger asteroid
is drawing plenty of attention
for another possible close encounter.

While an object half the size of a football field
flying at nearly 17,500 mph
may be cause for concern in light of the Russian meteor strike,
NASA and astronomers from around the globe
say the planet and its inhabitants
are in no danger.

The chance of asteroid 2012 DA14 colliding with Earth
are infinitesimally small,
they say. At its closest, DA14 is projected
to pass within 17,100 miles of Earth near
near Sumatra over the Indian Ocean
at about 2:24 ET,
then head off into space.

However, if, by chance, it did hit?
The fallout would be devastating. ..."

"The meteor that streaked across the skies over Russia

struck Earth's atmosphere with a force
about 30 times greater

Nasa scientists have said..."

My thoughts:

I am very fascinated by the physics behind the power of a subsonic "waveform" and pressure wave propagated at such high SPL ... There is much to be learned here.

Earthquakes and meteroites usually do not harm humans, it is the resonant frequency of the buildings and construction materials around them that fail. and that does hurt people... and it is the sub-sonic, long waveform "ELF tsunami wave" in air, earth or water that causes certain material of a given size, shape and composition to fail, and this failure results in injury to civilized populations. (Some glass windows failed, but not all the glass windows, for example.)

There is a delay between the 'flash' and the 'boom' as that waveform travels over distance. Understanding that delay can obviously save injuries, and death with quick reaction to knowing what is coming next.

For example:   If suddenly, there was a blinding "flash" outside, the normal reaction would be to run to the window to see what happened... and satisfy the "what the hell was that" curiosity... when actually, for the next 30 to 60 seconds, running to the window is probably the very worst option until the "boom" blows by.

Fascinating stuff to ponder in sub audio land!

Depending on the type of earthquakes we're talking about, CO2 can also be released in massive quantities and kill more people through suffocation, than buildings falling, etc.

If there's any volcanic activity around a fault line, like around the Azores, the population has to consider that huge quantities of odorless CO2 might be released during a quake.

Staying indoors is a bad idea for a whole lot of reasons, and being in a room that's rapidly filling up with CO2 is one of them.

Mixey!

Excellent point!

...and an especially excellent point to remember in an earthquake!

I guess it's pretty safe to consider that...
whatever might be belching out of a sudden crack in the earth,
or a sudden fireball explosion up in the sky...
in a massive quantity, sudden release,
is probably not going to be very friendly to humans.

Ok, also, I just saw this on YouTube:

— Russian Fireball Largest Ever Detected by CTBTO's Infrasound Sensors 360 —

YouTube Description from CTBTO:
Published on Feb 19, 2013
"Infrasonic waves from the meteor that broke up over Russia's Ural mountains last week were the largest ever recorded by the CTBTO's International Monitoring System. Infrasound is low frequency sound with a range of less than 10 Hz. The blast was detected by 17 infrasound stations in the CTBTO's network, which tracks atomic blasts across the planet. Listen to the audio files of the infrasound recording after it has been filtered and the signal accelerated. Read more:http://www.ctbto.org/press-centre/pre...

The recording was sped up 135 times, in reality it lasted 25 minutes! The sound files were produced by CTBTO's infrasound guru Pierrick Mialle. For those interested in getting really techie, Pierrick says the sound file he produced lasts 14 seconds (which corresponds to 31.5 minutes at real "speed"). When you listen you can hear the meteorite detection for about 8 seconds (or 18 minutes at real "speed"). Pierrick modified the speed but also changed the frequency content -- so that you can better hear the signal against any background noise. To get a more precise duration of the signal that was recorded by the Kazakh infrasound station than you hear in the animation, Pierrick used specialized software and voilà - we have 25 minutes. Pierrick is part of a team of dedicated scientists in the CTBTO's International Data Centre -- who spend their days monitoring the world for nuclear tests.

Between 17 and 21 June scientist from all over the world will be meeting in Vienna to promote the wider scientific application of data that are used for test-ban verification.

I saw a very nice meteor
streak across the sky (east to west)
ta few nights ago... right over the D'Street Deck... about 3:00am.
A small one, but it it flamed brightly into a small fire ball moving quickly and lasting up to 1 to 2 seconds before burning out...
totally silent, before, during and after...

The flare flash was bright enough to see it for a few moments after
when I blinked or closed my eyes... (like what happens after a camera flash bulb goes off in a dark room).

I guess it's connected to this:

— Absolutely mindblowing video shot from the Space Shuttle during launch —"Drop whatever you're doing and watch this. NASA has released videos shot from onboard the Space Shuttle's Solid Rocket Boosters in the past, but you've never seen one prepared as masterfully as this. For one thing, the footage was shot in high definition, so the image is exceptionally clear."

"...Try to let what you're witnessing sink in.
See those numbers
flying past in the upper right hand corner?
That's the Shuttle's airspeed.
See that gleam of light against the inky backdrop of space
at 2:08 and 3:11?
That's the Shuttle continuing on its flight path
into low Earth orbit.
Hear the eerie rattling, haunting moans, and weird dinosaur noises?
That's what it sounds like to be a Solid Rocket Booster,
falling to Earth from an altitude of 150,000 feet..."

Sol 2082: Selfie at Gale Crater

"This panorama combines 83 exposures taken by the rover's Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) during the Sol 2082 of Curiosity's work on Mars (June 15, 2018)

A Martian dust storm has reduced sunlight and visibility at the rover's location in Gale Crater.

A storm of tiny dust particles has engulfed much of Mars over the last two weeks and prompted NASA's Opportunity rover to suspend science operations. But across the planet, NASA's Curiosity rover, which has been studying Martian soil at Gale Crater, is expected to remain largely unaffected by the dust. While Opportunity is powered by sunlight, which is blotted out by dust at its current location, Curiosity has a nuclear-powered battery that runs day and night.

The Martian dust storm has grown in size and is now officially a "planet-encircling" (or "global") dust event."
