Come on Guys!

"I will Survive" Gloria Gaynor

"I Will Survive" is a song first performed by Gloria Gaynor, released in October 1978. It was written by Freddie Perren and Dino Fekaris. Arranged by Mac Huff. Published by Hal Leonard. (8200466) ISBN 0634091921.

The song's lyrics describe a narrator who finds personal strength while recovering from a break-up; it has often been used as an anthem[citation needed] of female empowerment, a gay anthem, and HIV/AIDS awareness - and is a firm favourite on the karaoke circuit. It is one of the most famous disco songs of all time, and easily Gaynor's biggest hit; it received massive airplay in 1979, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100, also reaching number one in the UK the next day. The song was originally released as the B-side to a Gaynor song called "Substitute", a track thought to have more potential for mainstream success by her record label. Disc jockeys began flipping the single over and eventually copies of the record were pressed with "I Will Survive" as the A-side ("Substitute" managed to peak at number 107 on Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart). The song was rated number nine on George Carlin's 10 Most Embarrassing Songs of All Time.

It received the Grammy Award for Best Disco Recording in 1980, the only year that the award was given. It is ranked #489 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

Here is an obvious one:

Heartbreak Hotel-Elvis Presley

Gotta agree with George Carlin about "I Will Survive".   No offense to anyone here but I never cared for that song, or for the whole disco genre.

These kinds of lists aren't just of songs you like though...

There are also a lot of songs that sound like love songs but really aren't ...
A newer one: "Beautiful" by James Blunt. Very sad lyrics, but they play it at weddings!

We forgot one, the most depressing song about love ever:

"When A Man Loves A Woman" by Percy Sledge

Listen to the lyrics, its about a guy so hopelessly in love with a woman, he dosent realize 1.) She dosent love him, and 2.) She is dragging his heart through the mud because the poor guy is a sap.

How many weddings have you been to where the bride and groom slow dance to this?

Funny thing is they are starting off their life together dancing to a song about heartache and despair lol.

Sue & MM,

Good points about the songs people consider love songs that are really quite sad.  If they're playing those tunes at weddings, no wonder the divorce rate is better than 60% with first marriages and then increases with subseqent marriages.LOL

Hi MM,
I knew Percy, he was on a couple shows I was on the "Chitlin' Curcit" at the Howard Theater in DC and another in Elizabeth, N.J., he was trippin', lol.

He had a few other follow-ups that could qualify also:

"Warm And Tender Love"
"It Tears Me Up"

Are two that come to mind from that 1966 era.

Dream,

This used to be one of our favorite topics of conversation when I was at Creem, "inappropriate wedding songs that people actually played."

It started when one of our editors, Cathy Gisi, told of being at a wedding where the first dance song was "Send in the Clowns" ...with its classic line, "Don't bother, they're here..." perhaps referring to the in-laws?

The other classic Cathy came up with that really happened; "Please Release Me" by Englebert Humperdinck. Back in the day, a lot of people loved that song and thought it was so romantic. Come on! He's begging to be released! She did witness a first dance to that one ...LOL
