I shot the above pics... with my Daughter Jess's old digital camera.

It's a little HP Photosmart M425 (hand me down) old camera...
(many of You know how I love using old stuff that still actually works)...

I shot the pic hand held, (held real still) testing it out... and that pic is what I got. No telescope involved, just a regular (old) digital camera, and a wing and a prayer hoping to get something worth looking at.
*lol* ~Geno

p.s: Remember to always "Look Up!" for something interesting, and even point a camera once in a while, any camera...
hold real still, and "shoot"...
sometimes you'll be surprised at what you actually record and capture.
It's all about the fun of it all! ~Geno

It illustrates the impact humans have on this place all too well, Geno.

Very cool video. ... and the moment you captured in your photograph is amazing! What timing!!!!!!! AWESOME!!!!!

Hi Mixey!

(((Thank You! I do love the randomness of catching cool "stuff" at the right time. It's fun when you realize after the fact, that you just caught something worth looking at, on "digital film" ...using good old everyday technology. ~Geno)))

Ok, here's an interesting one.
Remember a while back...
The Perseid meteor Shower in 2009...

from someone who really knows what he's doing...

Look at this video that Jeff Sullivan captured in CA,
and posted on YouTube... wow!

Jeff Sullivan writes:

"Published on Aug 4, 2012
*** WATCH THIS FULL SCREEN IN 720P HD FORMAT! ***
Timelapse footage of the annual Perseid Meteor Shower in August.
The slow, horizontal lights are airplanes.
The fast, vertical streaks are the meteors.
Many are faint so you'll only see most fo them if you follow the instructions above and view this in 720P HD and expand the video full screen.
This footage is all from the Perseid Meteor shower in 2009.
I'm working on a new timelapse video to cover 2010-2012
as well as other meteor showers such as
the Geminids in December (2012).

I've written a blog post on my no-moon shooting technique:

Producing Milky Way Images - Jeff Sullivan

You can also create a timelapse video from a sequence of night images:

Create A Timelapse Video of a Meteor Shower - Jeff Sullivan

Lastly, this is 100% real, 0% fake. Here in the Eastern Sierra region of California and Nevada where I live, we have very few people to produce light pollution, very dry, clear skies, and we can drive to elevations over 11,000 feet there there is less air and pollution to shoot through.
These links to more of my night photography clearly demonstrate that I have no need to fake any of this:

Geno How did you find this guy?

I love his video and the information on his page! Very cool how he's sharing his process too! You and he have a lot in common this way. If you haven't already friended each other on Facebook, you should. Very good vibe here. I like that he gives credits too, like you always do.

Thanks for posting this!!

If anyone would like to track the 3 mile wide asteroid Toutatis, which will be passing very close to earth in the next few days, here's the link.

Asteroid Toutatis... live feed from Italy.

The asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs was probably about a 1/2 mile wide.

Impressive thought.

December 14th, 2012:
It's 3:00am in the morning...
Just got done a Mixing session...
It is freezing cold outside.
A super, crystal clear, crisp night out there,
and i am tired as hell,
but ...
I stayed outside for about 10:00mins... freezing,
and yet, in that short time, I saw three meteors,
zip across the southern sky in front the three stars of "Orion's belt"!

Amazing night out there.

If you are reading this right now, go peek outside and look to the southern sky.

Awesomeness on a cold crisp night!

Ok... break out the shaving cream, Earth!

NASA Video: Asteroid to give Earth close shave - Feb 15th, 2013 -(Click Here)

"A space rock of the kind that hits Earth about once every 1,200 years will pass harmlessly by Earth on Feb. 15."

"...Close but not too close, a fast-moving asteroid will pass 17,200 miles above Earth on Feb. 15, NASA reports.

The asteroid, 2012 DA14, is a space rock weighing roughly 143,000 tons and measuring 148 feet long, about half the size of a football field. NASA asteroid expert Don Yeomans, author of Near-Earth Objects: Finding Them Before They Find Us, compares the asteroid to the one that leveled hundreds of square miles of Siberian forest in the "Tunguska Event" in 1908. ..."

Oh... and by the way in case you've never heard of it... this is what happened with that "Tanguska Event" thing in 1908...

and... right now it's almost time for this one... in like 3:00 mins...

- Close call asteroid hurtling toward Earth today -
Gary Strauss, Dan Vergano and Todd Halvorson, USA TODAY -

After Friday morning's Russian meteor blast
that reportedly injured 1,100 people,
an afternoon flyby of a far bigger asteroid
is drawing plenty of attention
for another possible close encounter.

While an object half the size of a football field
flying at nearly 17,500 mph
may be cause for concern in light of the Russian meteor strike,
NASA and astronomers from around the globe
say the planet and its inhabitants
are in no danger.

The chance of asteroid 2012 DA14 colliding with Earth
are infinitesimally small,
they say. At its closest, DA14 is projected
to pass within 17,100 miles of Earth near
near Sumatra over the Indian Ocean
at about 2:24 ET,
then head off into space.

However, if, by chance, it did hit?
The fallout would be devastating. ..."

"The meteor that streaked across the skies over Russia
in a blinding fireball on Friday
struck Earth's atmosphere with a force
about 30 times greater
than the Hiroshima bomb,
Nasa scientists have said..."

www.telegraph.co.uk/science/space/9874662/Russian-meteor-hit-atmosphere-with-force-of-30-Hiroshima-bombs.html

My thoughts:

I am very fascinated by the physics behind the power of a subsonic "waveform" and pressure wave propagated at such high SPL ... There is much to be learned here.

Earthquakes and meteroites usually do not harm humans, it is the resonant frequency of the buildings and construction materials around them that fail. and that does hurt people... and it is the sub-sonic, long waveform "ELF tsunami wave" in air, earth or water that causes certain material of a given size, shape and composition to fail, and this failure results in injury to civilized populations. (Some glass windows failed, but not all the glass windows, for example.)

There is a delay between the 'flash' and the 'boom' as that waveform travels over distance. Understanding that delay can obviously save injuries, and death with quick reaction to knowing what is coming next.

For example:   If suddenly, there was a blinding "flash" outside, the normal reaction would be to run to the window to see what happened... and satisfy the "what the hell was that" curiosity... when actually, for the next 30 to 60 seconds, running to the window is probably the very worst option until the "boom" blows by.

Fascinating stuff to ponder in sub audio land!
~Gene

Depending on the type of earthquakes we're talking about, CO2 can also be released in massive quantities and kill more people through suffocation, than buildings falling, etc.

If there's any volcanic activity around a fault line, like around the Azores, the population has to consider that huge quantities of odorless CO2 might be released during a quake.

Staying indoors is a bad idea for a whole lot of reasons, and being in a room that's rapidly filling up with CO2 is one of them.
