Jeff!!!

Yes, Yes, Yes!!! Exactly!!!
Including myself here... Everybody that I've shown this to, has gotten choked up when the audience takes over singing the "lead vocal"... truly a moment of great performance captured on video.

I miss it that in todays' "popular music", there is NOT underneath it all, somewhere a simple, beautiful song, one that is not contrived, one that can be felt as real, one song that can easily inspire a group of people to join in and warmly sing along from the honestly felt emotion deep in their collective hearts and souls.

Really tough to inspire a reaction that happens in the above video... with todays' pre-fab formula muzak GaGa style main stream crap.

Hats off in massive praise to Joao Bosco & our friends in Brazil!

Very Interesting...
Here is the (probably very messed up)
Google Translation of the Lyrics:

Portuguese to English translation

Msica: O Bbado e a Equilibrista
Autores: Joo Bosco & Aldir Blanc
~~~~~
Music: The Drunk and the Wire
Authors: Joao Bosco & Aldir Blanc
~~~~~~

Joo Bosco - O Bebado E A Equilibrista

Lyle Mays, utilizing Spectrasonic's amazing Software (and gorgeous sampled voices,
including a sick acoustic bass) in an improvised jam with Alex Acua ...
two geniuses, just having fun...

More Lyle Mays ... if you don't know Lyle, or his work
with The Pat Metheny Group, you're in for a treat.
Look into Lyle's body of work, and then pick your
jaw up off the floor. He truly is an amazing
musician and a great player.

In this early 90s video Lyle burns through his composition
"Chorinho" with his acoustic band live in concert.
This is a "part 2" video, but you'll hear the melody
played through a few times. Enjoy...

Geno... and everybody...
Despite Windows 7 sucking BIG TIME and Internet Explorer NOT
dancing well with Soulful Planet (as far as formatting text) I will
nonetheless plunge ahead while I try to figure out what the hell is going on...  Angry

I discovered some info on a favorite post of mine in this thread that
Geno so graciously provided almost a year ago...
it is a video from
the DVD of a performance by Joo Bosco and band
in 2006 ... it can be purchased
and I'm going to pick up a copy because the recording is gorgeous,
the band is fantastic and the crowd is TOTALLY dialed in... doesn't get much better...

Here's what I've found out:

O Bbado e Equilibrista by Joo Bosco & Aldir Blanc
Video from the DVD Obrigado Gente  Joo Bosco ao Vivo (Universal Music), 2006
Recorder Fev 2006, Auditrio Ibirapuera, So Paulo, Brazil

THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG:  Imagine back to 1978 its summertime in Rio de Janeiro.  Some folks are sitting around a table; among them Joo (Bosco) and Aldir (Blanc), chatting and sipping beer. Someone recalled Charles Chaplin who had passed away in Christmas 1977. They talked about his life and works.  Joo remembered he had composed beautiful songs, such as Smile and he took out his guitar and began to play it. Aldir painted a picture of a drunk wearing a derby, bowing to Brazilia in spite of their suffering and missing their exiled relatives and friends because of military dictatorship.

Henfil (Brazilian cartunista) was demanding amnesty to get his exiled brother Betinho (human rights militant) back home. Women were (Marias) crying for their husbands, who were being tortured and killed by the dictators forces. Clarice Herzog was screaming in the street, They killed my husband !! (Vladimir Herzog was a Brazilian journalist. He was found hanged in prison.) It is believed that he actually had died while being tortured.

Rope-walker (equilibrista) is an illusion of freedom of being always in danger.
This song - O Bbado e Equilibrista - practically became an amnesty movement hymn.
In 1979 the Amnesty finally came.

It was in this way this song was born. Thats why in the video all the audience is singing this song, so deeply moved; Some can barely manage to move their mouths for the emotion felt. Some weep as the music washes over them. Some sing and sway with joy, knowing  the horrible past is past.

FREE TRANSLATION OF LYRICS:

The day was falling like overpass
And a drunk wearing mourning recalled Charles Chaplin
The moon like whorehouse madam asking each cold star for a lent brightness
And clouds up there like blotting paper absorbs the tortured stains
Such a crazy distress !!
The drunk wearing derby behaving daringly in Brazilian night
(I believe, the author meant Brazilian night as dark time, military dictatorship time)

My dearest Brazil
Who dreams of Henfils brother coming home
So many people have departed in a hurry
Our sweet home cries. And so Marias. And so Clarissas.
But I do know that such a pain cant be in vain
The hope, dancing on the swinging rope
Knows that each step is dangerous
And the show must go on

Here's the amazing video again...
listen to, and watch the audience take up this song. It's incredible,
watching these people sing about unspeakable sadness from the point of post-liberation....

This song belongs here too, in my opinion.
I posted this in the other holiday/Christmas music threads
but it definitely qualifies as a great performance.

The human voice is an amazing instrument all by itself.
A Cappella singing and harmonizing is an enormous challenge;
when done beautifully it's one of the best musical listening
experiences one can enjoy. Whether it's Doo-Wop or choirs or
glee clubs, the sound of tight vocal harmonies resonates with
just about everyone.

The video below plays an a-cappella version of "Snowfall" that will
knock your socks off if you've never heard it before... run and grab a
good set of headphones or turn up your monitors...
the vocal harmonies in this number will slay you.

Here's the YouTube URL if it didn't load above...

In my opinion this is the best arrangement and performance ever conceived
of Claude Thornhill's most famous recording, "Snowfall," which was
released in 1941 as Columbia 36268. m-pact recorded this version
some years ago and it appears on their CD: "The Carol Commission -
A Christmas Collection", which is still available at their website:

This album is also available as a digital download at iTunes.

Jeff!!!!!!

'Wow, that is one AWESOME ARRANGEMENT...
and PERFORMANCE
of Snowfall.

I always loved this tune,
and have recorded it with artists a few times over the years,
one of those being with Vincent Montana, Jr's version of "Snowfall" being my favorite... I'm adding this one in to that list of favorite versions!!!

Really, really NICE!!!
